PhD admissions: What to look at?

One goes for Ph.D. hoping to do some ground breaking research and getting intellectual satisfaction out of it. Engaging and challenging one's mental abilities is what research is all about and a Ph.D. gives you ample scope to do so. But what are the factors that one must look at while going for admissions for Ph.D.

Here I am going to list some prerequisites that one must think of even before applying to a college.

Firstly, one should broadly know what he or she is going to study and research, meaning the broad area of research which one wants to pursue. It is important that one goes in for something that one likes as it will become cumbersome after a while to carry on reading and researching a field which you don't like that much. Moreover, a Ph.D. is generally very different from semester based programs because it doesn't have clear milestones and you cannot get away with not reading a part of the complete course that you do not like. It may so happen that the part you do not like is the cornerstone of your work and there is no way around it. Also, it generally happens that what we don't like is what is difficult for us to learn. But there are not short-cuts in a Ph.D. You have to learn what is needed for your research.

The next part to think of is the school and prospective supervisor that one is going to work under. It is always advisable to go for a big brand school and a super-star supervisor as it would be beneficial for your work and will give you visibility during your placements. But, the most important factor to consider is the kind of work and publication that your prospective guide has. One should choose a guide who has reasonable research experience and visible output in terms of publications in good journals. In research your output is measured in terms of your publications, both quantity and more importantly the quality. A supervisor who has experience of publishing in top tier journals is a great asset as writing and publishing in these hallowed journals is also a major subject in itself and someone who is adept at it is always a great help. Do understand that a big name school is important but more important is the quality of your supervisor as your own productivity and output would depend on that.

Moreover, last but not the least one should look at the life that the prospective school or institute has to offer. One generally spends 4-5 years of his or her life in Ph.D. and if you are miserable on the personal front because of the place then your productivity suffers and also everything else. So, the personal front is an important facet that one should look at. If you feel good and are happy in your personal life then you will  have fun doing work as well. I can tell from personal experience that Ph.D. work becomes excruciating if you don't like the place where you are working.

So, those are some factors in a nutshell that I would want people to look at before admissions to a Ph.D. course.

Research Output and Impact: A new dimension for MBA aspirants to consider

MBA aspirants and parents generally look at placements of the school as the metric of the capability of the school. It is also the sole decider and the scale which the media uses and propagates with much fanfare and hoopla. Any educational qualification should be about education and learning. The litmus test of any course taken should be the learning that one gets and the intellectual satisfaction that one gets by getting enriched intellectually during the course of the program. Getting a job and the salary are by-products. As the famous adage goes "Learn then earn". So to measure the intellectual capability of any institute any MBA aspirant should also look at the kind of research that the faculty of the institute have done and are doing. How many papers in quality journals have the faculty published. A good pointer to the quality of a journal are impact factor of the journal in which the article is published. For social sciences, of which management is a part, an impact factor of one and above is good, especially in the case of India. So faculty members publishing in journals with impact factor one and above are fairly good at what they do. So it is my advice that before finalising a college do look at the research that the faculty do and their research output. Do understand that your job and your success in it is dependent on your knowledge and capability. Any college can only provide you a platform but long term success and growth can only be ensured when you have quality in you.

Tools for Social Network Analysis

Introduction

The human life and specifically social life has become online. Which means that internet has become ever pervasive and our lives are continually shifting to the cyber world. The social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have grown into behemoths and have provided the hitherto silent proletariat a new media to voice their opinion, make friends, share their achievements and moments of glory, get in touch with old friends, etc. Indians are not behind the world in any sense in the internet revolution, rather the average Indian netizen is younger and more active on social networks than others around the world.[1]

With this social network revolution, businesses across the world have tried to leverage the wealth of knowledge on the internet and social networks to better understand their customers and prospects. Analytics and specifically social network analysis (SNA) is a creation of this need of the businesses. Through SNA the businesses try to understand the consumer behaviour and use it extensively in their Segmentation, Targetting and Positioning (STP) strategy.

Objective

This study tries to find out some of the tools available online for free to analyse social networks and more specifically Facebook, and to demonstrate the visualisations and analyses possible through such tools.

Methodology

The tools used in the study are Gephi, myFnetwork app on Facebook and Challenger Network Graphs app on Facebook. These tools have been uploaded and run with the Facebook data. The latter two apps can be found directly on Facebook and can be run from one's Facebook account itself to visualize the Facebook network. Gephi is a third party application which can be found on the internet for free and can be installed on the computer. It needs a .gdf file with the Facebook data on it to run. The .gdf file can be obtained through the myFNetwork app and can be used to run on Gephi.

My personal Facebook data was used in all the three applications and the output was obtained as a network.

Results and Discussion

The resulting outputs of the myFnetwork app were:

The outputs from Challenger Network Graphs app were:

Below is the total network of my Facebook friends based on their friendship with each other. The edges show the friendships between two people and the nodes are individual friends.

Conclusion

The above tools can be used to visualise any relational database. The network and clusters inform us about the relationships between individuals, individuals and companies, etc. These relations and underlying data can be analysed to arrive at conclusions about the suitable choice of media to target a specific target segment, the kind of channel to follow, the target segment or individuals who can act as influencers, the language, tone and visual of the message, etc. These relations also inform us about the current trends and the habits of different individuals in a cluster. We can analyse the clusters to draw a wealth of consumer information which would be beneficial to us in our business.
